Problem Statement
In the construction industry there is a growing desire to use 3D scanners when creating models and documentation for buildings with existing structures, however there are few companies with in-house capabilities. To fill this demand, students can be taught to do the scanning and manipulation of the gathered data.
Elevator Pitch
Point Cloud Construction is creating an informational 3D scanning package for students who want to learn about 3D scanners and gain a competitive edge in the construction graphics job market. The informational package will be a step-by-step instruction on how to use the scanners and manipulate the resulting point cloud data. Unlike other construction graphics job seekers, our product will prepare our users for the future job opportunities that 3D scanning will produce.
Research Question
Is there currently a need in the construction industry for trained professionals that are proficient in the process of 3D
scanning?
Hypothesis
Based on our early survey of general contracting companies we feel that there is a growing need within the construction industry for students with 3D scanning and modeling skills.
Final Product
Our final product will be a twelve step learning module that details the process of gathering point cloud data from a 3D laser scanner and extracting a usable model from that data in Revit.
